It’s daylight before I make my first stop for fuel. There’s a small hotel just next door to the petrol station, so I fill up then head there to book a room. I need to rest and think about where I’m heading.

I wake some hours later. It’s dark again outside which tells me I’ve slept all day. I look at my mobile, I have five missed calls from Harlow and one from my sister, Abbie. I have two voice messages, one from each. I play Abbie’s first, I can hear a baby crying in the background and I smile, my niece Tianna is only two months old, I still haven’t met her.

‘Sweetie, Harlow called. Is everything okay? Please call me back.’ I smile, I miss her so much, but now she’s left home too, I don’t worry about her as much. Neither of us bother to see our parents and we’re both better for it. I dial her number and she answers straight away, “You are lucky you didn’t wake up the baby, I’d have lost my shit,” she jokes.

“Sorry, I’m no good with baby timetables. How are you both?” I ask.

“Never mind us, what’s going on? Harlow sounded really worried.”

“I’m all good. I needed a break is all,” I explain.

“So, you just left Harlow, no note, nothing? Have you two fallen out?”

“No Ab’s. It’s a bit of heart break, I just need time. I’ll call Harlow now and explain. Sorry she bothered you.”

“She didn’t bother me, you’re my little sister. If you need to clear your head, come here, I could certainly use the help.”

“To Devon, really?” I ask, thoughts racing through my mind.

“Yeah, why not. You need to come and meet this baby niece of yours before she’s all grown.”

“Why didn’t I think of that?” I ask with a smile. Relief floods me, at least I have a plan for now.

Next, I call Harlow. She also answers quickly, “Oh my god, I have been worried sick,” she screams down the phone. I hold the handset away from my ear.

“Sorry, it was a rash decision and I meant to call, but then I crashed out at a hotel. It all just got too much. Forgive me?”

Harlow sighs. “Jesus, Sophia. You shouldn’t be out there. You know someone is looking for you, the club can’t protect you unless you’re here. Come back.”

“I can’t Har, Jax was happy to see me go…”

“Wait, Jax knew?” she buts in.

“Yeah, he watched me go from his balcony,” I mutter bitterly.

“Piece of shit,” she yells, “Jax!”

“Look, I’m gonna go, I’ll call you when I stop to rest again.”

“I love you Soph,” she says softly. I feel bad. We always do stuff together and she came to London because of me, I should have asked her to come with me this time but she’s setting up a life there. She has a job and things are working with her and Ryker, I don’t want to be the one to destroy all of that just because my life is a mess.
